Joseph Rykwert received his architectural education at the Bartlett School and
the Architectural Association in London.
He earned his doctorate at the Royal College of Art in London in 1970 and
currently is the Paul Philippe Cret Professor of Architecture and Professor of
Art History, Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Professor Rykwert taught at the Royal College of Art before becoming Chairman
and Professor of Art at the University of Essex in 1967.
In 1979 he was appointed Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Cambridge University,
where he was a Reader in Architecture until 1987.
He has held visiting professorships and fellowships at numerous European and
American universities.
He has received fellowships
from the Bollingen Foundation (1966),
the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. (1981),
the Graham Foundation (1983-1986),
and the Getty Center of the History of Art and the Humanities in Santa Monica,
California (1990).
Other honors include
the Chevalier de l'Order des Artes and Lettres (1984),
the Alfred Jurzykowski Foundation award (1989),
and election to the Accademia di San Luca in Italy.
He is an Honorary Doctor of Science at the University of Edinburgh.
Professor Rykwert has written extensively and published many books on
architecture, including
The Idea of a Town (1963),
On Adam's House in Paradise (1972),
The First Moderns (1980),
The Necessity of Artifice (1982),
The Dancing Column: On Order in Architecture (1996)
all of which have
been published in several languages.
